While it will come as no surprise to veteran China-watchers, the word is now out from the country’s leadership: golf is simply too elitist for official taste. So the big question is, will foreign businessmen have to go cold turkey to work in China? Will pricey rehab-centers start new lines of business treating GWS — Golf Withdrawal Syndrome? Could this start an east-west “Golf War”?
Well, I’m sure that for many American corporate leaders this will be the last straw. Stock market plunges, corruption, intellectual property theft, one party rule – all that can be handled. But no golf? Maybe the game will become the new underground sport in China.
