How do McCain and Obama Differ on Nuclear Power?

Not much it seems at first glance.

We will produce more energy at home. We will drill new wells offshore, and we’ll drill them now. We will build more nuclear power plants.

John McCain

As President, I will tap our natural gas reserves, invest in clean coal technology, and find ways to safely harness nuclear power.

Barack Obama

Both statements indicate that the candidates are aware of the need to bring nuclear power back into the energy debate. The not-so-subtle difference is that Obama recognizes that there is a safety problem with nuclear power that first has to be addressed. McCain, it appears, just wants to let the corporate dogs loose. Nuclear power needs to be part of the national energy debate. This may be more difficult for Obama given that a very vocal part of his support base is anti-nuclear power. But leadership here could start building a needed consensus on this issue.
